Welcome to Adulthood - New Adult Fiction

“There’s a period of time where adulthood feels like a new pair of shoes. The expectations of independence and self-sufficiency are still new, still being broken in. New Adults are the people who have just begun to walk in those shoes; New Adult fiction is about their blisters and aches.”- NA Alley.

What is the New Adult genre? It is an emerging genre of fiction about the life experiences of 18- to 25-year-olds. The genre came out of the on-line world, it is a big on-line self-publishing phenomenon. Readers are driving this developing category of literature because they are looking for books with characters related to them. These “new” adults are experiencing a world of firsts:becoming more independent, facing life’s challenges, and taking on more responsibilities. Characteristics of New Adult fiction are first-person narration, romantic, dramatic, "emotionally-intense story lines, soap-opera like plots with college settings, and characters with “issues” ranging from history of abuse, anger management issues, and troubled family lives."

These are a few key authors and titles of the New Adult genre:

This romantic story centers around Abby Abernathy, a good girl with a dark past, and Travis Maddox, a bad boy, a fighter at the Circle fight club.Travis does not believe in relationships, he is not what Abby is looking for in a guy. Losing It by Cora Carmack

It is another teacher-student romance."Bliss doesn't want to graduate college with her virginity intact, so she figures a one-night stand is the easiest way to remedy the situation. What she doesn't count on is seeing the guy she left in her bed hours earlier when she walks into theater class - and he’s not a student, he’s her professor."

Easy by Tammara Webber

After Jacqueline's boyfriend of 3 years, Kennedy, breaks up with her she is shocked to find herself drawn to Lucas, a handsome guy who rescues her from an attempted rape. She is also attracted to London, her Economics tutor. This romantic and sweet novel is loaded with emotions and secrets.

Bared to You by Silva Day
