Staff Pick - The Kind Worth Killing by Peter Swanson

Inspired by Patricia Highsmith's Strangers on a Train, The Kind Worth Killing by Peter Swanson features married couple Ted and Miranda Severson, a couple who should never have married. Ted, a wealthy dot-commer, and his stunningly beautiful wife are building their dream home. Miranda supervises the work while Ted stays home in the city making more money. When Ted discovers that Miranda is having an affair with their hapless builder Brad, he plunges to a dark place vowing the most lethal form of revenge.

Enter Lily. Archivist Lily Kintner is another drop dead (pardon the pun) gorgeous woman whom Ted happens to meet in an airport in London and who also happens to be traveling on the same flight. Ted, loosened by alcohol, very quickly opens up to Lily about his desire to murder his wife. Apparently kindred spirits, Lily has a dark and shady past of her own that makes the leap to supporting his plans surprisingly easy.

Intricately plotted with sharp and fast turns, The Kind Worth Killy is a domestic psychological suspense thriller that makes excellent airplane reading as you will be engrossed from gate to gate. There is no one to like here. All the characters are flawed - sociopaths, bumblers, incompetents and just plain evil. The story is told from multiple viewpoints, sometimes with the same plot being told by multiple voices. In a similar vein to other recently published domestic thrillers, The Kind Worth Killing asks the reader to consider if they really truly know everything about their partner.

King of Lies by John Hart

"John Hart creates a literary thriller that is as suspenseful as it is poignant, a riveting murder mystery layered beneath the southern drawl of a humble North Carolina lawyer. When Work Pickens finds his father murdered, the investigation pushes a repressed family history to the surface and he sees his own carefully constructed façade begin to crack. Work's troubled sister, her combative girlfriend, his gold digging socialite wife, and an unrequited lifelong love join a cast of small town characters that create no shortage of drama in this extraordinary, fast-paced suspense novel. Hart's mastery of prose and plot belie his newcomer status as he explores the true heart of a man. An illuminating anatomy of a murder and the ripple effect it produces within a family and a community, The King of Lies is a stunning debut."--Publisher."

The Carrier by Sophie Hannah

"When Gaby's plane is delayed, she's forced to share a hotel room with a stranger: Lauren, who is terrified of her. But why is she scared of Gaby in particular? Lauren won't explain. Instead, she blurts out something about an innocent man going to prison for murder. Gaby soon suspects that Lauren's presence on her flight isn't a coincidence, because the murder victim is Francine Breary, the wife of the only man Gaby has ever truly loved. Tim Breary has confessed. He's even provided the police with evidence. The only thing he hasn't given them is a motive. He claims to have no idea why he murdered his wife."--Publisher.
